Do you have access to a hospital in your community with a Healthgrades badge as being a 50 Best or 100 Best hospital? What could choosing one of the best hospitals in America with that distinction mean for you and your family?

Each year, Healthgrades, an online resource for information about physicians and hospitals, releases its America's 50 and 100 Best Hospitals™ awards to reognize the best hospitals in America. Recipients of these awards demonstrate they can sustain high-quality clinical outcomes over time.

When the 2017 list of the best hospitals in America was revealed, a Healthgrades press release explained what it means to make the list and how making an informed decision when choosing a hospital could dramatically improve patient outcomes.

Hospitals in California appeared most on the list of the best hospitals in America, while Illinois was the state that appeared second most freuqently.

What It Means to Make the Grade

The best hospitals in America in 2017 are announced on a list from Healthgrades.

As stated in the press release about the best hospitals in America: “The recipients of the America’s 50 and 100 Best Hospitals Awards™ demonstrate superior clinical outcomes across the majority of common inpatient conditions and procedures¹ and sustained this performance for at least three consecutive years. Healthgrades research revealed that America’s Best Hospitals also outperform their peers in treating a core group of conditions that account for more than 80% of mortalities in areas evaluated by Healthgrades², including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke.

“Patients treated in hospitals achieving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award™ have, on average, a 27.1% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive this award. If all hospitals, as a group, performed similarly to hospitals achieving Healthgrades 2017 America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award, on average, 179,438 lives could potentially have been saved³.”
