Eating a healthy breakfast is just one way to start your morning off right. Consider adding these 5 healthy habits to your morning routine to boost your spirits and supercharge your day!

1. Drink Warm Water With Lemon

Start your day with a warm drink of lemon and water.

First things first, grab your favorite 16-ounce glass, fill it with very warm water and top it off with the juice of half a lemon.

Drinking warm water in the morning can help flush your body of toxins, quicken your digestive system, and reduce constipation. It can also have a soothing effect on your stomach.

Drinking the warm water with lemon juice helps revive your senses, reduce your feeling of hunger, and freshen your breath (but still brush your teeth!). Lemon water is also believed to help break down body fat, cleanse and stimulate the liver and kidneys, keep your skin looking young and healthy, and provide you with nourishing elements like vitamin C and potassium.

Tip: Use a straw when drinking to help protect your teeth enamel from the acid in the lemon. If lukewarm water isn’t your thing, that’s okay. Your water can be cold. However, the benefits listed above of drinking very warm water may make you change your mind and it doesn’t take long to get used to it.

2. Take Your Vitamins

Make sure you're not taking too many vitamins. Always stick to what your doctor has recommended.

If your doctor has recommended or approved vitamin or mineral supplements, go ahead and reach for them while you’re grabbing that glass of water. Taking your daily vitamins can help give you a boost of essential nutrients and doing it early in the day makes it one more thing you can check off the list of to-dos. And we all know how much happier we are when items get checked off that list!

Tip: Vitamin and mineral supplements are not a replacement for healthy eating. You may be getting the nutrients you need directly from your food. Work with your doctor to determine if a vitamin or mineral supplement is right for you.

3. Try Some Yoga

Keep stretching! Flexible joints and better circulation decrease aches and pains.

Just 10 minutes of yoga each morning can help de-stress your body and prepare it to keep moving all day. By taking the time to stretch in the morning, you’re taking action that can help you reduce your risk of injury and ease achiness in your muscles and joints. Yoga can also increase your lung capacity, relieve anxiety, help with your memory, and, according to the American Heart Association, boost heart health!

Tip: There are many videos and DVDs that teach yoga for beginners. There are also videos and articles online that specifically demonstrate yoga you can do before getting out of bed in the morning. As always, before beginning any form of exercise, consult with your doctor.

4. Make Your Bed

Start your day well with a freshly-made bed, so you can end the day on a positive note, too.

Who likes coming home to a messy room? Seeing an unmade bed and clothes sprawled on the floor at the end of the day can be depressing. Don’t let it happen! Remember how it feels when you first walk into a hotel room, everything perfectly clean and the bed crisply made? You can get that feeling every day in your own room by accomplishing this two-minute task in the morning.

Starting your day with even a small sense of accomplishment can leave you feeling more motivated to complete other tasks, no matter the size, throughout the day. You will also feel organized and on top of things. If you’ve left your clothes from the day before on the floor, drop them in the clothes hamper, or better yet, make that a nightly habit.

Tip: If you usually crawl into bed and kick the covers toward the bottom, try folding or rolling the bedspread or comforter down before getting in. It will make it much easier to unroll or unfold it back to the top of the bed in the morning. And if you use several throw pillows to decorate your bed, make sure you pile them nicely on the floor or a chair, or even put them inside a blanket box each night. That way you won’t waste time hunting around the room for stray pillows.

5. Make an Antioxidant Smoothie

Smoothies come in all shapes and sizes! Just be careful not to add a bunch of sugar, and always follow your doctor's dietary advice.

Before you leave your house to conquer your day, make yourself an antioxidant smoothie. A delicious, nutritious smoothie is a great way to get a vitamin and nutrient boost in a simple and tasty form.

There are many different recipes you can try as you hunt for the one that makes you happiest each morning. Maybe it will be this delicious one from developgoodhabits.com:

  • 1 cup of frozen berry mix (strawberries, cherries, pomegranate, raspberries, or blueberries)
  • 4 ounces of plain, nonfat Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup of almond milk
  • 2 Tbsp of milled flax

Blend these ingredients together until they are smooth and take your smoothie with you as you head out. You can make it as thick or as smooth as you want just by adding or subtracting water.

Tip: If dairy isn’t your thing, try this Banana Strawberry Soy Smoothie made with soy milk, silken tofu, strawberries, bananas, and honey.
